Task 3 | IMAGES AND NARRATIVES ABOUT MATAS DO LITORAL, AFTER 2017’S FIRES

The main objective is to assess social perceptions, through the collection and analysis of images and narratives about Matas do Litoral after 2017, aiming to understand what is the society mindset after the catastrophic event.

Sub-Task 3.1 | Collection and analysis of news from newspapers, after 2017's wildfires

Newspapers will be selected and all news after 15 October 2017 targeting as forest, rural wildfires and forest management in the Matas do Litoral territory will be collected and analysed, in order to unveil the media discourses and images.

Sub-Task 3.2 | Interviews to stakeholders

A semi-structured interview will be carried to assess the views and opinions of stakeholders on: i) their relationship with Matas do Litoral; ii) the uses, functions and management of Matas do Litoral, before and after 2017’s wildfires; iii) the impacts and consequences of the wildfires; iv) ideas and promising solutions for the future management and fire prevention; v) their previous involvement in the management and decisions in Matas do Litoral; and vi) their willingness and availability to become more involved. The interviews will be applied to the ShareFOREST stakeholder platform.

Sub-Task 3.3 | Questionnaires to local communities

A questionnaire will be applied to the inhabitants of the local communities around the Matas do Litoral. The questionnaire protocol will be focused on: i) participants relationship with the Matas do Litoral; ii) opinion on the uses, functions and management of the Matas do Litoral, before and after 2017’s wildfires; iii) assessment on the impacts and consequences of the wildfires; and iv) ideas and promising solutions for the future management and fire prevention in Matas do Litoral.
